Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an FDA Cleared (2008) treatment for patients suffering from treatment resistant major depression [MDD], offering an alternative to treatment resistant medication. TMS for treatment of MDD is covered by most insurance providers, including Medicare. Our new state of the art Brainsway DTMS device is now FDA cleared for treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. [OCD] The TMS protocol offered at Spark TMS is established for the patient under the direct supervision of Andrew Peshek, M.D.
For the past several years, clinical studies have explored the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS] as a potential breakthrough treatment in a range of other mental disorders, including treatment of autism spectrum disorder [ASD}. Even though not FDA cleared for treatment of such other mental disorders, Physician-directed applications, also known as “off-label” uses are an integral component of the art and science of medical practice, particularly for specialty physicians, such as psychiatrists like Dr. Peshek. Using medical expertise and judgment, physicians may choose to use approved medical devices for uses not listed in the FDA approved or cleared labeling, as appropriate. The FDA states that doctors, in the exercise of their best judgment, may use approved drugs or devices off-label if they are well informed about the product, base its use on firm scientific rationale and sound medical evidence, and maintain records of its use and effects. The TMS protocol offered at Spark TMS is established for the patient under the direct supervision of Andrew Peshek, M.D., whose background and experience in TMS dates back to June of 2004.
TMS is performed in a doctor’s office or clinic. Treatment sessions last less than 20 minutes and are typically performed 5 days per week, over a six-week period.
You will be seated in a comfortable chair, some measurements may be taken and you may be provided with earplugs.
Your doctor will position the magnetic coil on your head and treatment will begin. You may feel a moderate tapping on your head under the treatment coil and you will remain awake and alert throughout treatment.
Following your session, you will be able to drive home and you can resume normal activities for the rest of the day.
